Possible Blog Changes Coming?
During the past few weeks I have had some technical problems with the server that handles this web site. (I run my own server. At home.) I’m giving serious thought to transferring this blog to another service.
At this point I really don’t quite know what service that might be. I’m leaning toward some combination of a basic blog site plus another site to support my photograph gallery, with the latter perhaps being one that can support online transactions.
I’ve just begun to investigate the latter issue. I’ve looked at smugmug, flickr, and pbase – but not decisions yet. Any thoughts or experience on this would be gratefully accepted. (Click the email link in the sidebar.)
Regarding the former, I’ve set up a little parallel blog at http://dansoutside.blogspot.com/. Take a look and let me know what you think.
Thanks.

Membership, Again
&t</a;Having perhaps gotten some comment/discussion spam problems under control (knock on wood…), the membership feature at this site (and at my photography site) is again open. Site membership allows you to comment on posts or to start your own comment threads in the discussion area of the site – for example, to post a question.
Find out more via links in the Membership section of the sidebar on the right side of this page.

Sigh, the Comment Spammers are Here
I’ve begun getting a steady trickle of a particular type of comment spam here over the past few days. I have turned off access to the discussion feature, so send me an email if you want to contact me or have me post something a the site.
Life goes on… :-)

So, Dan, What's With That Site Membership Thing?
Glad you asked… well, actually, glad I asked.
I was checking server stats tonight and I noticed that about 50 people are “members” of this web site. What does membership provide to you, or perhaps more important, what does it not provide to you?
Membership will not get you on anyone’s email spam lists. I’m the only one with access to the membership info since I run my own little server and I don’t share, much less sell, membership info. Unfortunately, it doesn’t get you free prizes either…
What membership does provide is access to the site’s discussion forum. If you are a member, click the “login” link in the Membership section of the sidebar and log in. Then click the create a new topic link to post a new message. You can also comment directly on one of my posts by clicking its Discuss link.

dan's outside word cloud
SnapShirts creates “wordclouds” and puts them on t-shirts. Here is a wordcloud generated from the text of this site.

Proof That I'm No Bird Expert
Earlier I posted some photos of a bird I saw during a hike at Calero park this week. I identified the bird as a “hawk” – even though that was pretty much a wild guess on my part. (I’m definitely no bird expert.)
My friend Tom Clifton wrote in to set me straight. He tells me that the characteristic shape of the wings shown in the photo clearly identified the bird as a turkey vulture. I’ve corrected the labels on those pictures. Thanks, Tom!

Duplicate Photo Postings
For technical reasons I won’t explain here, duplicates of some previously-posted photographs may appear on the home page as I update some materials on this site.

No Site Updates for Awhile
This will likely be the last site update until later in August. I’ll be out and about in early August and probably will not have consistent access to the Internet after today. Watch for postings (and the RSS feed) to resume around the middle of August.

I'll Be Away
I’ll be away – in the backcountry! – during the first part of August. There will likely be no updates while I’m away. But when I return, watch for a story and photos!

Updated Photography Pages
There were so many images on the Sierra Nevada Photographs page that they were taking forever to load over the slow connection to my server. I split this page up and put photos from Yosemite on a separate page: Yosemite Photographs.
This does not completely resolve the problem. Ultimately I may need to organize these photos in a different manner.
