Yesterday's weather forecast
The interesting long-range forecast I posted yesterday has already been retracted, and it doesn’t look like any rain is heading my way in the near future.

Weather
This is the kind of stuff I like to start watching for this time of year:
THE GFS REALLY GOES WILD NEXT WEEKEND…BRINGING SIGNIFICANT RAIN TO
THE N BAY SAT NIGHT/SUN AND OVER THE DISTRICT THE FOLLOWING MON AND
TUE. THIS IS ABOUT 4-6 WEEKS EARLIER THAN THE USUAL FIRST GOOD RAIN
FOR OUR DISTRICT. THE OTHER MODELS DONT GO OUT THAT FAR BUT SHOW NO
INCLINATION TO DEVELOP A SIMILAR PATTERN SO WILL DISREGARD THIS COOL
WET GFS FOR NOW. THIS MODEL FORECAST IS A BIG CHANGE FROM PREVIOUS
GFS RUNS.
(From the San Francisco Bay Area Forecast Discussion.)
Every September I start thinking that the rainy (and snowy!) season is just around the corner, when in reality it is still a good two months away. These tantalizing forecasts – which almost never pan out – just encourage me!

Randol Trail #2

Randol Trail #2. Almaden Quicksilver Park. September 3, 2004.
Another version of a shot I posted a few days ago. I think I like the previous one better on the web site, but the new one seems to work better as a print.

Mt. Hamilton

This shot is something of an experiment. It consists of four 8-megapixel images stitched together – though the resulting higher resolution is not apparent in this reduced-size image.

Randol Trail. Almaden Quicksilver Park. August 28, 2004.
Ironically, this photo was an afterthought. I had just put away my tripod (after taking a less-interesting shot) and was getting ready to hike away when I started thinking about a different photo. I didn’t want to get my tripod out though so I was almost ready to just leave. Then I figured I’d just carefully take a couple handheld shots. I took the first one and when I looked up I noticed the interesting trees on the left, which were not in the original shot.

***About this page
You might wonder “why so many pictures of this park?” It is the closest decent hiking location to my home, so I go there frequently – often once a week. Although this park overlooks Silicon Valley (and even San Francisco on a clear day) and some trails are almost literally in the backyards of expensive Almaden Valley homes, there is a lot of great hiking here. (More info at http://www.parkhere.org/ and at Ron Horii’s Almaden Quicksilver web site.)
I have created this page for photographs of the interesting and historic old structures and other remnants of New Almaden’s mining period. There is no escaping the fact that this was a mining site for many years (hence “Almaden Quicksilver County Park”), and I find the ruins historically and aesthetically interesting.
Note: Additional photographs from this park are found on the Almaden Quicksilver County Park Photographs page and here.

This site may be down for a little while at some point over the weekend while I add a hard drive and take care of some other server maintenance stuff.
