2005February
***February 5, 2004
– Finally was able to get on the trail again at Calero after last weeks closures for muddy conditions. Hiked out to the corral and then took the footpath up and along the ridge to the far end of Javelina Loop, returning in the counterclockwise direction on the main loop trail.
***February 6, 2005
– Time for a quick hike at New Almaden today. I went up Deep Gulch and then to the summit, returning via Mine Hill.
***February 12, 2005
– Took a nice little hike into a new Area of Almaden Quicksilver. Starting at McAbee Road I hiked past Senador Mine and over the ridge, dropping down and then around to Guadalupe Reservoir. From here I headed back to the McAbee Road entrance.
***February 13, 2005
– Just time for a short urban hike on the nearby creek trail today.
***February 19, 2005
– With a 4-day weekend, I had hoped to be skiing this weekend. However, once again the weather gods did not cooperate and I settled for a very nice rainy hike at Castle Rock State Park.
***February 20, 2005
– A pleasantly rainy little hike with the weather vacillating between slight sprinkles and moderate rain. I did the “long loop” at Almaden Quicksilver. Quite a few flowers are beginning to come up.
***February 22, 2005
– A little one-hour urban hike.
***February 26, 2005
– Went to Calero but trails were closed. Ended up at Quicksilver. Hiked out New Almaden Trail and took cutoff to Randol and then up Prospect #3. Went to English Camp and then down Mine Hill to cutoff to Day Tunnel and from there back to Mockingbird Hill.

***January 1, 2005
– New Years Day hike at Almaden Quicksilver. Out on Randol and then up Prospect #3 to the ridge; left turn and back via Mine Hill. Took many photos.
***January 8, 2005
– After a week of rain and school, managed to sneak out for a short urban hike on the LG Creek trail.
***January 15, 2005
– A one-day trip up to Squaw Valley with Owen, Fletcher, and Andy.
***January 17, 2005
– Urban hike on the Creek Trail.
***January 22, 2005
– Nice hike at Almaden Quicksilver. Started at Mockingbird Hill and went out on New Almaden Trail past Prospect #3 to the oak-covered ridge near Webb Canyon, where I took some pictures. Backtracked and then took a lateral up to the Randol Trail and followed it past the Buena Vista mine site to return to Mockingbird Hill.
***January 23, 2005
– Hiked at Calero today, in foggy and cool conditions. I started early and hiked out on Pena and the Javelina Trails. At the ridge on the Javelina trail I turned right off the main trail to visit the summit, from which I spotted a trail heading back along the ridge between the two sides of the Javelina Loop – so I returned this way.
***January 29, 2005
– I was going to hike at Calero again and photograph the impossibly green hillsides. I drove there, got out of the car, loaded up my pack, walked to the trailhead… and found a “trail closed” sign. Instead I went to the Mockingbird Hill entrance to Almaden Quicksilver and followed a sort of odd route. I hiked out on the New Almaden Trail and then caught the faint lateral up to Randol. From here I went almost to Prospect #3 and took a short-cut to joint that trail to ascend to Mine Hill Trail. I followed the ridge and then dropped down on Mine Hill. I took a lateral that was supposed to go to Day Tunnel, but I turned right when I should have turned left and ended up on Mine Hill again though a bit lower. I finally followed the Hacienda Trail back to the car.
***January 30, 2005
– Well, Calero was still closed. After driving there I turned around and went to the Fortini Road entrance to Santa Teresa County Park, with no specific plan other than hiking up the hill above the entrance. I ended up taking a pretty interesting hike to a place I hadn’t been before. I followed this trail (the Stiles Ranch Trail?) over a couple of ridges and then dropped down to the right. I eventually hit a junction and climbed up over a small saddle to drop down to a main trail again, turning right and going almost to the Pueblo Picnic Area. Here I turned right an backtracked towards Pueblo (?) Peak on a fairly muddy trail. This follows a ridgeline and eventually joins a dirt road that I followed to Coyote Peak which has benches for enjoying the view! I dropped down from here on a different trail eventually walking though the main Pueblo area and taking the Fortini Trail back to where I started.

2005March
***March 6-7, 2005
– March began with a quick trip to Yosemite. On day one I left home rather late (noon!) and arrived in the Valley near 5:00 p.m. I drove back up to Wawona Tunnel to take some pictures before getting a camp site in the Valley. On day two I arose early, grabbed breakfast (such as it was) at Curry Village and headed up to Badger Pass. I skied out to Sentinel Dome before running out of time and returning.
***March 12, 2005
– A foggy hike up onto my favorite ridge at Calero Park – lots of wildflowers and new grass.
***March 13, 2005
– Another New Almaden hike, from MacAbee entrance past Senador Mine and then Guadalupe Reservoir, then back on New Almaden Trail.
***March 26, 2005
– After a bit of a break (final exams!) I finally managed to get out briefly today to do the Senador Mine/Guadalupe Reservoir loop at Almaden Quicksilver, which gave me a chance to try out my new camera.
***March 27-29, 2005
– Not a hike, exactly, but Day 1 at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, Day 2 in Death Valley, and Day 3 driving back via 395 and Carson Pass.
