It's not about the ship

Ship on San Francisco Bay and thunderheads building over the Sierra. July 5, 2004.
This photo was take from the upper level of SBC Park during today’s San Francisco Giants (vs. Rockies) baseball game. Not a bad view, huh?
The distant clouds are thunderheads building over the Sierra Nevada, perhaps 100 miles away.
I contemplate these things as I plan for a 9-day pack trip starting this weekend and debate whether to carry a tent or my bivy and a tarp…

A very quick hike…
As part of the run-up to my 9-day Sierra pack trip starting at the end of this week, I’m trying to hike every day – uphill when possible. We’re all going to a Giants game later this today so I went on a very early hike this morning. I climbed to a 1500+ foot ridge at Almaden Quicksilver Park, descended, and was back home before 10:00 am.

Poison Oak

Poison oak, oaks, and trail. Almaden Quicksilver Park. July 3, 2004.
Not my greatest photo… but it shows that the transition to summer conditions in the coastal hills is complete. The grass has gone brown and the poison oak is changing colors in the hotter, drier areas.

Fall in Tuolumne Meadows

Fall colors on the Tuolumne River. October 12, 2003.
Not a current photo… duh! I took this last year at the end of the annual October Fletcher Lake pack trip. It has languished on my hard drive since then. This morning I was working with some new Photoshop techniques and managed to make this shot presentable.

Another Mission Peak photo

Man on Mission Peak. June 27, 2004.
The odd thing is that this fellow and the 20 or so other people who arrived at the summit while I was there stopped at the northern sub-peak and never came over to touch the actual summit. Maybe I needed a shower…

Away
After today I’ll be heading off to the Sierra for a long-awaited pack trip with my Talusdancers friends. Expect to see photos here after my return.
