Busy Times
I haven’t posted much here since my recent Eastern Sierra ski adventure and, before that, my Yosemite waterfall trip. The end of the academic year approaches and I’m quite busy herding my students toward final exams and wrapping up a two-year stint as president of our academic senate.

I am fortunate in that I have lived within a four-hour drive of Yosemite Valley since my family moved to California when I was four years old.

Ranger Dan?
Not really. However, once in a while I get mistaken for a ranger – and it happened again today. I was photographing flowers near a trail intersection at Castle Rock State Park when a group of kids and a parent stopped to figure out which way to go. I asked where they were going. “The parking lot”. I told them that they could take either fork since both end up there; the left fork goes past Goat Rock and the right fork goes past the waterfall.
The adult with the group said, “you must be the ranger we talked to yesterday.”
It must be the green pants or something…
The first time this happened was many years ago in the southern Sierra. In those days I tended to hike in old surplus wool army pants and a gray work shirt. A hiker actually offered to let me check his wilderness permit!
(Some years ago I did meet the real “Ranger Dan” in Death Valley. But that is another story.)

In fact, some may look relatively realistic, especially if you are used to seeing highly altered images. In any case, the goal with these images is not to create some sense of realism, but rather to use natural images as a starting point for significant manipulations.

It Must Be Backpacking Season
On yesterday’s Castle Rock hike I saw many backpackers heading out to the somewhat dismal trail camp 3 miles from the trailhead. I talked to a few of them – I think that people are starting to get in shape for their summer pack trips to the Sierra.
I’ve also started to see those folks who ruin a perfectly good day hike by carrying a backpacking load, hoping to hit the trail in good shape when the real backpacking season begins in a month or two.
Personally, I subscribe to the Two Days of Agony school of preparation for carrying backpacking loads: Do a lot of day hiking ahead of time, and then suffer a bit on the first couple of days of the first high-altitude trip of the season. Better that than suffering through a dozen day hikes carrying 30-pound loads.
