The Annual End-of-Year Photo Review

Recently it has become my holiday habit to go through all of my photos from the previous year. My primary reason is practical – to clear out files I know I’ll never use. However, it is an opportunity to review photos of the places I’ve visited, and I often discover photographs that I either overlooked or put aside for further work when I first took them. Expect to see a few of these images here and at G Dan Mitchell | Photography during the next week or so.

The story: On this late afternoon in the spring I had finished carefully photographing a few gulls by the lake shore and was returning to my car to put my gear away and leave when the sky around and above me was filled with wheeling gulls. There was no time to set up a tripod or carefully compose a shot, but I think this image captures my surprise as I found myself in the middle of this flock
