A quick trip chronology
I’ll post a Talusdancers trip report in a few days, but here is the short version of this week’s trip.
***Monday
– I drove to Yosemite by myself and got a campsite at Tuolumne Meadows. After getting set up I headed up the Elizabeth Lake trail at about 4:00 pm, setting a 6:00 pm turn-around time so that I’d likely get back before dark. I passed Elizabeth Lake and kept going, following the trail to the to where it crosses the ridge in a narrow gully. After pausing for a quick snack (and to put on extra clothes in the cold wind) I headed back down the way I came, taking photos of the early evening light at Elizabeth and in the forest just before Tuolumne Meadows.
***Tuesday
– I left Tuolumne mid-morning and headed towards Tioga Pass. After grabbing a quick espresson at the Tioga Pass Resort I took a short detour up to Saddlebag Lake, which I have driven past for years. Then I headed down to Lee Vining and turned south on US 395, meeting Owen in Bishop at around 1:00. After visiting the Mountain Light Gallery and Wilsons, we met up with the rest of the group (Owen’s niece Leah and nephew Ryan, along with two of their friends) for a Trailhead Barbecue shopping stop at Vons and a stop at Shats Bakery for breakfast treats. We headed up to Four Jeffrey campground where we barbecued and camped.
***Wednesday
– We drove up to the North Lake trailhead and headed off for Lamarck Col, 5 miles and 3300′ feet away. After a tough hike we topped out at the small tarn just below the pass where we camped for the night.
***Thursday
– All six of us climbed to the pass (12,880′) to send Ryan and Kevin on their way to South Lake via Darwin Canyon, Evolution Basin, Muir Pass, LeConte Canyon, Dusy Basin, and Biship Pass. The remaining four of us returned to our camp to finish packing and then headed down to Lower Lamarck Lake for the night. The weather began to deteriorate as we hiked and we set up a “rain camp” when we arrived. Shortly, the thunderstorm began in earnest, and it continued for a couple hours.
***Friday
– I got up somewhat early so that I could complete the 2.3 mile hike to the trailhead in time to drive home for an evening concert.
More later…
