2003 Highlights

&On the first day of 2004 I think I’ll list a few highlights from last year:

;li>Started 2003 with a News Years Day hike at Almaden Quicksilver Park. (Given the weather here today it does not look like that will happen this year!) I probably visited this park a few dozen times during the rest of 2003, discovering a number of new trails and routes and taking a lot of photographs.
  • In January I had my first telemark skiing experience. As a longtime cross-country skier it was quite something to ski at Northstar and a few weeks later at Squaw Valley.
  • An April cross-country ski overnight was supposed to go to Glacier Point but a late-season storm changed our plans. Instead we spent the first night in the Valley and then skied part way to Glacier Point in not-so-swell snow conditions then next day, camping with an overlook of the Clark Range.
  • Concluded the 2002-2003 ski season with a late-May desert camping / telemark / cross-country trip to the Mammoth area. (photos and a brief description)
  • My family did our (almost) annual “waterfall day” trip to Yosemite Valley in June.
  • I spent a week on Vancouver Island in July, canoing the length of the Great Central Lake and then backpacking to Della Falls – with my friend an colleague Paul Setziol and his kids. (See the trip report on the Talusdancers web site.)
  • August began with the annual Talusdancers trip – a weeklong backpack into the Pioneer Basin area. (See the trip report on the Talusdancers web site.)
  • September and October included several short trips into one of my favorite places, the area around Fletcher Lake. I took one short trip alone on which I hiked cross-country out beyond Ireland Lake. Another trip was with my oldest son. Then in October I ended the backpacking season with another Fletcher Lake trip, this time climbing Vogelsang Peak.
  • The year ended with a couple of short cross-country skiing trips. One, in mid-December, was with my daughter and some teaching colleagues. The second, on December 31, was with my whole family.

I look forward to lots of great outdoor adventures in 2004!
